Trimezia steyermarkii

Trimezia steyermarkii, commonly known as Yellow Walking Iris or Hand of God, is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial native to southern Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Venezuela. This plant is characterized by its upright growth, reaching up to 1.5 meters in height, with long, strap-like green leaves arising from its rhizomes. Its most distinctive feature is its bright yellow, iris-like flowers, which are adorned with prominent brown spots, particularly on the three larger outer petals. These flowers are relatively short-lived, typically lasting only a single day, but the plant produces them in succession over a long blooming period.

This species is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions as an ornamental plant, valued for its attractive foliage and cheerful flowers. It thrives in semi-shade to full sun and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil, although it can tolerate both waterlogged conditions and drought once established. A unique characteristic of Trimezia steyermarkii is its method of propagation via aerial plantlets that develop on spent flower stalks. These plantlets can root when they touch the ground, giving rise to the common name “Walking Iris.” The plant can also be propagated by division of its rhizomes. In some cultures, it is called “Hand of God” due to the three prominent outer petals of its flowers.
