Cyathea medullaris, commonly known as the Black Tree Fern or Mamaku (in Māori), is a striking and iconic tree fern native to New Zealand and surrounding Pacific islands. It is one of the tallest tree fern species, capable of reaching impressive heights of up to 20 meters (65 feet), although more commonly seen at around 10-12 meters. Its most distinctive feature is its thick, black, fibrous trunk, which is often adorned with persistent stipe bases (the lower part of the frond stalk) that create a textured appearance. The crown is composed of large, arching, dark green fronds, which can be up to 3-4 meters long, giving the plant a majestic and prehistoric look.

This tree fern is a significant component of the understory in New Zealand’s native forests, thriving in moist, sheltered environments. It prefers partial shade but can tolerate more sun if sufficient moisture is available. The Black Tree Fern is relatively fast-growing for a tree fern, especially in its early stages. It reproduces via spores, which are produced in sori (clusters of sporangia) on the undersides of the fronds. In cultivation, it requires well-drained, humus-rich soil and consistent moisture. While it can tolerate some cooler temperatures, it is not frost-hardy and needs protection in regions with freezing winters. Its dramatic form and size make it a highly sought-after specimen plant in gardens and conservatories in warmer climates.
