While “Summer wisteria” is sometimes used as a common name for Indigofera decora, it’s important to note that true wisterias belong to the genus Wisteria and are different plants, typically known for their large, pendulous clusters of flowers. Indigofera decora is a deciduous, spreading shrub native to China and Japan. It’s also commonly called Chinese indigo.

Indigofera decora makes a lovely “summer wisteria” due to its profuse bloom of light pink to purple, pea-like flowers that appear in axillary racemes during June and July, sometimes continuing intermittently into September. It typically grows to be 1 to 2.5 feet tall and spreads 3 to 4 feet wide, featuring compound pinnate leaves with 7 to 13 dark green leaflets. This shrub thrives in full sun and average, medium moisture, well-drained soil. It is relatively adaptable and can tolerate alkaline soils and some drought. In colder climates (USDA Zone 5), it might experience some tip damage or die back to the ground in harsh winters but should regrow in the spring, as it flowers on new growth. Pruning can be done in late winter or early spring, similar to how Buddleja is often managed, by cutting stems back close to the ground to encourage fresh growth and flowering.
