Philodendron geniculatum Bogner & Croat is quite an unusual Philodendron. It is a creeping or climbing but not appressed-climbing. Petioles are smooth to slightly rough, dark green to somewhat reddish tinged, rounded below and flat on upper side, basally with a sheath up to 5 cm long, apically with a conspicuous geniculum which is very deep red, and rough. Leaf blades elliptic, sub coriaceous, more or less dark green and weakly glossy above and light green underneath,margin slightly hyaline and sometimes reddish tinged, releasing an aromatic odour when crushed. Venation is parallel-pinnate, veins sunken on upper side and prominent underneath; midrib broad, whitish to whitish-green.

form the Modern Latin genus name Philodendron (Schott, 1830), form Greek philodendron, neuter of philodendrons “loving trees,” form philo- “loving” (see philo-) + dendron “tree” (form PIE *der-drew-, form root *deru- “to be firm, solid, steadfast,” also forming words for “wood, tree”). The plant so called because it clings to trees.
