Aristolochia leuconeura, also known as pipevine, is a woody, evergreen vine that produces unusual flowers. It is native to humid forests in Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, and Peru. The plant is hardy in USDA Zones 9-11 and grows best in moist, humid conditions.
Aristolochia leuconeura has large, leathery leaves that are bright green with lemon-yellow veins. The leaves are 5 inches long and have a strong white veining pattern. The plant produces small, pipe-shaped red flowers that bloom singly from the leaf axils. The flowers have a calyx that resembles a Dutchman’s pipe.
Aristolochia leuconeura is a fast-growing vine that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. It is a great choice for gardens, parks, trellises, arbors, and pergolas.
Aristolochia leuconeura is a member of the birthwort family. The ancient Egyptians used birthwort as an ingredient in theriac, which was used to treat ulcers, fevers, and snake bites.
