Typhonodorum lindleyanum, also known as “Water banana”, is a giant aroid plant that can grow up to 4 meters tall. It has broad, heart-shaped leaves and a soft, starchy stem. The plant’s flowers are spadixes, and its fruits are large berries that turn bright yellow when ripe.Â
Typhonodorum lindleyanum is native to tropical rainforests in eastern Malesia, Madagascar, the Comores, Zanzibar, Réunion, and Mauritius. It grows well in consistent moist soil and partial shade, and prefers calm and shallow water, such as small lakes with little water level changes.Â
The plant’s leaves can be used to make a fiber for preparing fish filets, or to make an edible flour. The seeds can also be eaten after being boiled several times and washed.Â
