The leaves of this Philodendron undergo a dramatic transformation as they mature. Juvenile leaves typically start long and somewhat uniform, but as the plant grows, they develop into a distinctive Y-shape with prominent lobes, often likened to bunny ears at the top and a long, pendulous lower section. Mature leaves can reach an impressive size, ranging from 16 to 26 inches in length, making it a standout addition to any plant collection due to its architectural interest.

This Philodendron is believed to be a natural hybrid, potentially originating from Brazil, although its exact origin remains somewhat uncertain. The plant first came to the attention of botanists through Bette Waterbury, who obtained it from the collection of the renowned Brazilian artist and plant collector Roberto Burle Marx. The accession number 69686 was assigned by Dr. Thomas B. Croat of the Missouri Botanical Garden for research purposes. Eventually, the plant was officially named ‘Bette Waterbury’ in honor of the individual who brought it to wider attention. It thrives in warm temperatures with bright, indirect light and prefers moderate to high humidity, requiring a well-draining soil mix and support like a moss pole as it matures and climbs.
