Planting And Care

  • Plant the vines in a warm spot that receives dappled sun throughout the day or where it is protected from the midday sun. Mandevillas require regular watering.
  • The soil should be evenly moist, but never wet and never allowed to dry out.Provide the plants 1 inch of water when the soil is dry to a depth of 2 inches. When your mandevilla is young, pinch back the vines at a leaf axis throughout the spring.
  • A leaf axis is a point on a stem where the leaf buds out. Pinching your Mandevilla at this point sends signals to the plant to produce a new branch and creates a fuller vine.
  • As your Mandevilla matures, prune out any dead vines or vines that are rubbing against other vines. Mandevillas problem pests include scale insects, mealybugs, red spider mites, and whiteflies.
  • If your leaves of vine develop brown or yellow spots, appear dried out or lack vigor, examine the upper and underside of the leaves closely. Mandevilla will not tolerate temperatures lower than 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • In areas where winter temperatures get lower than 45 degrees F, Mandevilla can be grown as an annual or can be brought inside to wait out the winter.Planting your Mandevilla in a container makes moving the plant inside easier.
  • Mandevilla flowers need sandy, well-draining soil with plenty of organic material mixed in. A good soil mix for Mandevilla plants includes two parts peat moss or potting soil to one part sand of builder.
  • When you bring your Mandevilla flowers indoors, be sure to check the plant carefully for pests and treat these pests before bringing the plant indoors. You may want to cut back the plant by up to one-third.
