Dillenia philippinensis

Dillenia philippinensis, commonly known as Katmon, is a flowering plant species belonging to the Dillenaceae family. It is notably endemic to the Philippines. This evergreen tree is recognized for its medium size, typically reaching heights of 10 to 15 meters. It is characterized by its erect trunk, smooth bark with shallow fissures, and large, showy white flowers. The plant thrives in low to medium altitude forests across the Philippine archipelago, although it is not well-suited to the colder climates of upland regions.

The Katmon tree yields a rounded fruit, often referred to as “elephant apple,” which measures approximately six to eight centimeters in diameter. This fruit features a fleshy, green, and edible pulp with a sour, apple-like flavor. It is utilized in various culinary applications, including the preparation of sauces, jams, and as a flavoring agent in dishes. Furthermore, the tree’s timber is valued for its suitability in furniture and cabinet making, and a red dye can be extracted from its bark. Also the Katmon has been placed on the Philippine twenty-five centavo coin.
