Cyperus alternifolius ‘Variegatus’, commonly known as variegated umbrella papyrus or variegated umbrella sedge, is a striking ornamental plant prized for its unique, horizontal, umbrella-like foliage that is striped with white or cream margins. This cultivar of the umbrella papyrus features the same architectural interest as the species, with tall, slender green stems topped by whorls of narrow, leaf-like bracts, but with the added visual appeal of variegation. It brings a touch of elegance and a tropical feel to water gardens, bog gardens, containers, and even as a houseplant.

This plant thrives in consistently moist to wet conditions and prefers partial shade to full sun, although intense afternoon sun in hot climates may scorch the variegated foliage. It is relatively fast-growing under the right conditions and can reach a height of 2 to 3 feet. The variegated umbrella papyrus is generally low-maintenance, mainly requiring consistent watering to prevent the soil from drying out. It can be propagated easily by division or by rooting the umbrella-like tops in water. In colder climates, it is often grown as an annual or brought indoors during the winter as it is not frost-hardy.
