Colocasia esculenta, also known as taro root, is a perennial herb that is native to eastern Asia. It has yellow-orange flowers and large heart-shaped leaves. 

Characteristics 

  • Leaves: Large, triangular or arrow head, with a long thick and fleshy petiole. The lamina is completely smooth and very hydrophobic.
  • Roots: Large, underground tuberous rhizome.
  • Flowers: Produces clusters of two to five fragrant inflorescences in the leaf axils.
  • Reproduction: Reproduce mostly through rhizomes (tubers, corms).
Habitat 

  • Found in the Central Valley of California.
  • Favors grasslands, wetlands, and bog and marsh habitat.
Cultivation 

  • Grows well in loamy soils with a pH range of 5.5-7.0.
  • Requires a combination of warm and moist climate with a mean temperature of 21-270 C.
  • Plant the root piece out in 80 cm intervals, 5 cm deep.
  • Water regularly.
  • Harvest by digging the roots out in autumn.

How to Care :

  • Make sure your plants are getting enough water and sunlight.
  • Recommended Soil Media: 40% Garden Soil 25% cocopeat 25% Organic manure/Vermicompost 5% charcoal chips 5% perlite.
  • Fertilize your plants once a month.
  • Avoid over-watering your plants.
  • Cut off any dead or diseased Leaves.
  • Make Sure Pots Have Drainage Holes.
  • Don’t Repot Immediately after received wait for at least 2-3 Days.
