Acalypha reptans (Dwarf Chenille) is a compact, somewhat trailing evergreen shrub noted for its unusual and eye-catching, crimson flower spikes, up to 3 in. long (7 cm). Free-flowering, the blossoms are produced sporadically throughout the year. They stand out against the foliage of dark green, ovate leaves.

Acalypha reptans or the Lance Leaf Copper Plant is a frost tender, colourful and bushy shrub with a low growing habit and ovate mid-greenleaves with a serrated margin.

It produces pinky-red catkin like woolly tail flowers up to 10 cms long, in summer and autumn.

This plant is grown mainly for its attractive flowers and lush foliage, in colder climates they can be grown indoors in bright light.

Good for a tropical feel to your garden.

Soil: Well drained light soils with added humus.

Maintenance: Trim to shape in winter, keep up the water in summer and fertilise with a balanced formulation in spring.

Diseases: Mealy bugs, red mite spiders and white fly.

Other Species: A. hispida and A. wilkensiana

Comments: Acalypha is the name used by Hippocarates meaning nettle. Pictured is a cultivar called “Stephie”.
