Majidea zanguebarica, commonly known as the black pearl tree or velvet seed tree, is a small ornamental tree native to East Africa. It belongs to the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), the same family as lychee and rambutan. The tree is prized for its attractive, rounded canopy of shiny, dark green leaves. While the flowers are small and inconspicuous, it’s the fruit that makes this tree truly unique. The spherical, three-lobed fruit ripens to a brilliant red and splits open to reveal its striking contents.
Inside the red fruit, nestled like jewels, are three velvety, blue-black seeds. These seeds are the source of the tree’s common names, as their appearance is reminiscent of polished pearls or black velvet. The ornamental nature of the seeds and the bright red pods makes the tree a popular choice for gardens in tropical and subtropical regions.
