Gac fruit, scientifically known as Momordica cochinchinensis, is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, where it is highly prized. While not as widely known as other tropical fruits, it’s considered rare outside of its native region due to its short harvesting season and limited cultivation. The fruit grows on a dioecious vine, meaning it has separate male and female plants, and it typically produces fruit only once a year. This makes commercial-scale cultivation challenging, contributing to its scarcity in international markets.
The fruit is easily identifiable by its spiky, bright orange-red exterior. However, it is the interior that is most remarkable. The fruit contains a soft, bright orange pulp and a central chamber with seeds covered in a deep red, oily membrane called an aril. It’s this aril that contains an extraordinarily high concentration of nutrients, earning Gac the nickname “fruit from heaven” in some cultures. It is a potent source of lycopene, with levels reportedly up to 70 times greater than that of tomatoes, and beta-carotene, up to 10 times more than carrots. The flavor of the fruit is mild and often described as having a subtle, avocado-like taste. It is not typically eaten raw on its own but is instead used in various culinary applications, such as a coloring agent for sticky rice dishes (xôi gấc) or as an ingredient in juices and supplements to harness its significant nutritional benefits.
