Ensete superbum ( Musa )

Ensete superbum, commonly known as the Rock Banana, is a striking, large monocarpic herb native to India. It is a member of the banana family, Musaceae, but unlike true bananas (Musa spp.), it is primarily grown for its ornamental value rather than its fruit. This plant is characterized by its massive, swollen pseudostem (false stem) and large, paddle-shaped leaves that can grow up to 3 meters in length. Ensete superbum is often found in rocky areas and steep slopes, hence its common name.

This species is unique due to its large size and the distinctive shape of its pseudostem, which can reach up to 2.5-3 meters in circumference at the base. It is a non-stoloniferous plant, meaning it does not spread by runners, and reproduces only through seeds. The flowers of Ensete superbum are borne on a large, drooping inflorescence, and the bracts are a dull claret-brown color. It is considered a rare and endangered species due to habitat destruction, making its conservation a priority.
