Crepidium purpureum, also known as the purple crepidium, is a species of terrestrial orchid found in a wide-ranging distribution across Asia. This small- to miniature-sized orchid is characterized by its swollen, fleshy stem, which lies on or is partly covered by debris. The plant typically has a few broad, ovate leaves that are dark green above and pale green below. The leaves are attached to the stem by a sheathing petiole. The plant produces an erect inflorescence with a spike of non-resupinate flowers, which are flowers that do not twist as they develop, so the lip (labellum) remains on top.
The flowers of Crepidium purpureum are a key identifying feature, with a range of colors from yellow-green to reddish-brown or purplish. The individual flowers are small, and the sepals and petals spread outwards. The most distinctive part of the flower is the lip, which is superior, flattened, and has a central depression. Its shape is often described as subovoid-rectangular and it is deeply two-lobed at the apex. The base of the lip is constricted and has ear-like lobes, or auricles, that curve backwards to embrace the short, stout column. This orchid is found in various habitats, including forests and grasslands, and is native to a broad region spanning from India and Sri Lanka to southern China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. It typically grows in humus-rich soil in shaded areas but can also be found in more open, exposed locations.
