Cat’s Claw Creeper

Cat’s Claw Creeper, scientifically known as Dolichandra unguis-cati, is a fast-growing, woody perennial vine native to tropical America. Its name comes from the distinctive three-pronged, claw-like tendrils that help it grip and climb onto surfaces. The vine produces beautiful, large, trumpet-shaped yellow flowers, often with reddish-orange lines in the throat. The leaves are typically arranged in opposite pairs, with the characteristic clawed tendril located between them. While its showy flowers and ability to rapidly cover walls and trellises have made it a popular ornamental plant, its vigorous growth and reproductive capabilities have led to it being classified as a serious invasive weed in many parts of the world.

The invasive nature of Cat’s Claw Creeper is a significant environmental concern. It spreads both by winged seeds, which are dispersed by wind and water, and vegetatively through an extensive network of underground tubers. These tubers make the plant incredibly difficult to eradicate, as it can readily regrow even after the main vine is cut or damaged. The vine’s aggressive climbing habit allows it to smother and kill mature trees and other vegetation by blocking sunlight and adding immense weight, which can cause branches and even entire trees to collapse. On the ground, it forms dense mats that prevent native plants from growing and regenerating, ultimately altering and threatening entire ecosystems.
