There are actually several species of Kopsia, but the one most commonly referred to as a flowering plant is the Kopsia fruticosa, also known as the pink gardenia or shrub vinca. It’s a beautiful and fragrant evergreen shrub native to Southeast Asia, commonly grown as an ornamental plant.
Here’s a description of the Kopsia fruticosa:
Growth Habit: Usually a woody shrub reaching 6-10 feet tall and wide, but can occasionally grow into a small tree.
Leaves: Glossy, leathery, and oppositely arranged, with wavy margins and a distinct drip tip. They’re typically 4-9 inches long and 1-3 inches wide, and have a slightly sunken vein pattern that creates a quilted texture.
Flowers: Fragrant, funnel-shaped blooms with five lobes. They’re usually pink with a darker pink or red throat, and measure about 1-2 inches across. The flowers appear in clusters near the stem tips throughout the year, with peak blooming in summer and fall.
Fruits: Fleshy, pitted drupes about 1 inch in diameter, ripening to a dull red color. They’re covered in soft hairs and contain a single seed.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil.
Watering: Regular watering is needed, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.
Uses: Kopsia fruticosa is a popular choice for gardens due to its attractive flowers, long blooming season, and fragrant aroma. It can be used as a hedge, border plant, or container specimen. In some cultures, it also has traditional medicinal uses.
Toxicity: It’s important to note that all parts of the Kopsia plant are poisonous if ingested, so keep it out of reach of children and pets.
